Biliteracy Seal for Diploma

The State Seal of Biliteracy “recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing one or more languages in addition to English.” Beyond encouraging students to study world languages, the Seal of Biliteracy provides employers with a clear identifier for individuals with language and biliteracy skills. During our commencement (graduation) ceremony, MCHS graduates wearing the California State Seal of Biliteracy Medallions display their readiness for “employment in an international and global context.”

Candidates for the State Seal of biliteracy must:

  • Fulfill all English Language Arts (ELA) graduation requirements with an average GPA of 2.0 and pass the CAASPP in ELA (administered in eleventh grade).
  • Achieve a B average in the same world language for 4 years and show speaking proficiency in that language sufficient to earn a score of 3 on the AP Language exam. Alternatively, students who pass the AP exam with a 3 or higher meet the world language requirement for the Seal.
