A-G Requirements

UC Admission Requirements

 

To be considered for admission to a UC campus, the fifteen-year long high school courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better, and students must complete at least 11 of the 15 courses prior to their senior year.  Students must earn at least a 3.0 GPA and nonresidents must earn a minimum 3.4 GPA in all A-G or college-preparatory courses to meet this requirement. The A-G requirements noted below are submitted by the Regents of the University of California.  

 

  1. Two years of history/social science: Includes one year of World History, Cultures and Geography, and one year of US History or one half year of US History and one half year of Civics or American Government.  
  2. Four years of college-preparatory English: Includes frequent writing, from brainstorming to final paper, as well as reading of classic and modern literature.  No more than 1 year of ESL (English as a Second Language) type courses can be used to meet this requirement.
  3. Three years of college-prep mathematics: Includes the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two and three dimensional geometry.  Approved integrated math courses may be used to fulfill part or all of this requirement, as math courses taken in the seventh and eighth grades if the high school accepts them as equivalent to its own courses (4 years of math recommended)
  4. Two years of laboratory science: Providing fundamental knowledge in two of these three foundational subjects: biology, chemistry, and physics.  (3 years recommended)
  5. Two years of the same language other than English: Courses should emphasize speaking and understanding, and include instruction in grammar, vocabulary, reading composition, and culture.  American Sign Language and classical languages, such as Latin and Greek, are acceptable.  Courses taken in seventh and eighth grades may be used to fulfill part or all of these requirements if the high school accepts them as equivalent to its own courses (3 years recommended)
  6. One year-long course for visual or performing arts chosen from the following, dance, drama/theater, music, or visual arts.
  7. One year (two semesters), in addition to those required in “a-f” above, chosen from the following areas: visual and performing arts (non-introductory-level courses), history, social science, English, advanced mathematics, laboratory science and language other than English (a third year in the language used for the “e” requirement ot two years of another language).

CSU Admissions Requirements

 

To be considered for admission to a CSU campus, students are required to complete a minimum 15-unit pattern of courses for admissions as a first-time freshman.  Each unit is equal to a year of study in a subject area.  A grade of a C or better is required for each course you use to meet any subject requirement.  California residents and graduates of California high schools will be eligible for admission by earning a 2.5 or greater a-g grade point average.  Any California high school graduate or resident of California earning a GPA between 2.0 and 2.49 may be evaluated for admission based upon supplemental factors.

 

  1. Two years of history and social science: Includes one year of U.S. history or 1 semester of U.S. history and 1 semester of civics or American Government AND 1 year of social science
  2. Four years of English: College preparatory English composition and literature courses
  3. Three years of math: College preparatory math including or integrating topics covered in algebra, geometry, and intermediate algebra. (4 years recommended)
  4. Two years of laboratory science: Two years of college preparatory science required with laboratory (1 biological and 1 physical).  Integrated science and interdisciplinary courses can meet this requirement.
  5. Two years of language other than English: Two years or through the second level of high school instruction in the same language; American Sign Language and classical languages such as Greek and Latin are acceptable.
  6. One year of visual and performing arts:  One year or two semester courses from the same discipline including dance, music, theater, visual arts or interdisciplinary arts.
  7. One year of college preparatory elective: Additional year chosen from the University of California a-g list.
